How to Prepare Your Boiler for Winter: Essential Checklist
Avoid winter boiler breakdowns with our essential preparation checklist. Simple steps to keep your heating running smoothly.
How to Prepare Your Boiler for Winter
As the colder months approach, the last thing you want is a boiler breakdown leaving you without heating or hot water. Taking a few simple steps to prepare your boiler before winter arrives can prevent problems, improve efficiency and give you peace of mind throughout the coldest season. Here is our essential winter preparation checklist.
1. Book an Annual Boiler Service
An annual boiler service is the single most important thing you can do to keep your boiler running reliably. A Gas Safe engineer will inspect all components, clean the burner and heat exchanger, check for gas leaks, test safety devices and ensure the boiler is operating at peak efficiency. Servicing in autumn, before the heavy demand of winter, is ideal timing.
Regular servicing also helps to maintain your manufacturer warranty. Most boiler warranties require an annual service to remain valid. If your boiler breaks down and you have not had it serviced, the manufacturer may refuse to cover the repair.
2. Test Your Heating Early
Do not wait until the first cold snap to switch on your heating. Turn on your boiler and radiators well before winter to identify any problems while the weather is still mild and engineers are less busy. Run the heating for at least an hour and check that all radiators are warming up evenly.
3. Bleed Your Radiators
If a radiator has a cold spot at the top while the bottom is warm, it likely contains trapped air. Bleeding the radiator using a radiator key releases this air and allows hot water to circulate fully. This simple task takes just a few minutes per radiator and can make a noticeable difference to your home's warmth.
4. Check Your Boiler Pressure
Most combi boilers operate best at a pressure of 1 to 1.5 bar. Check the pressure gauge on your boiler and top it up via the filling loop if it has dropped below 1 bar. If you are unsure how to repressurise your boiler, your annual service engineer can show you.
5. Insulate Your Condensate Pipe
Modern condensing boilers have an external condensate pipe that drains acidic water from the boiler. In very cold weather, this pipe can freeze, causing the boiler to shut down. Insulating the condensate pipe with foam lagging is a simple and inexpensive way to prevent this common winter problem.
6. Check Your Thermostat and Controls
Make sure your thermostat is working correctly and that your heating timer or programmer is set to your preferred schedule. If you have a smart thermostat, check that it is connected to your Wi-Fi network and that the app is up to date. Consider setting a frost protection temperature of around 5 degrees Celsius to prevent pipes from freezing overnight.
7. Lag Exposed Pipes
Pipes in unheated areas such as lofts, garages and external walls are vulnerable to freezing in cold weather. Lagging these pipes with foam insulation can prevent them from freezing and potentially bursting, which could cause significant water damage to your property.
8. Clear the Area Around Your Boiler
Ensure there is adequate ventilation around your boiler and that the area is clear of clutter, boxes and stored items. Good airflow is important for safe and efficient operation, and clear access makes it easier for an engineer to carry out servicing and repairs.
9. Check Your Carbon Monoxide Alarm
Every home with a gas boiler should have a carbon monoxide alarm. Test your alarm and replace the batteries if necessary. If you do not have a carbon monoxide alarm, install one immediately. Carbon monoxide is odourless and colourless, making it impossible to detect without an alarm.
